Volvo Penta MSB

Hello everyone!

Would anyone have a old Volvo MSB gearbox lying around? I need one of the casings for it. However I am happy to buy the either thing to get the spares.

Thanks!

Hello Kiwi. I have a Volvo Penta MSB reverse gearbox available for sale and looking for a good home. I am in Sydney. I cannot give you much history on it as I recently bought it with an MD17C which I have fitted an MS2 gearbox to, so the MSB is not required by me. I can tell you that it was run for five hours just prior to me purchasing it, as the vessel it was in motored that long to the shipyard in Brisbane where it was re-engined. There do not appear to be any oil leaks. it turns easily by hand and the gear selector clicks in to the three positions readily. It weighs around 25kg. So let me know if you are still interested....

Re: Volvo Penta MSB

Can u tell me on which motor was this gearbox? How many hours did the gearbox done? Pictures? Price?
I have volvo penta md17c, do u think it will match your gearbox?

Big problem is, that im from Europe. Do you have any experience in mailing things to EU? if not i know few people who travel to Aus every few months and could arrange for them to pick up this gearbox.

Re: Volvo Penta MSB

Hello Jan -

The history and photo attachments are at the beginning of this thread.
Here are the details again:
I cannot give you much history on it as I recently bought it with an MD17C which I have fitted an MS2 gearbox to, so the MSB is not required by me. I can tell you that it was run for five hours just prior to me purchasing it, as the vessel it was in motored that long to the shipyard in Brisbane where it was re-engined. There do not appear to be any oil leaks. it turns easily by hand and the gear selector clicks in to the three positions readily. It weighs around 25kg.

If you cannot open the attachments, then let me know your email address in a private message, so I can send some more photos to you.

I am asking AUD$250 for the MSB gearbox. I cannot arrange freight which would be quite expensive, I would think. I am happy to package it up for you, so that you can then arrange freight yourself.

Re: Volvo Penta MSB

I will take it!! Can u wait one week for my final conformation, my motor is in service and before i buy any parts i want to be sure that everything else is ok??

Your price is surprisingly low, not that i want to pay more but you could get 500eur on ebay anytime.
Also, can i ask why did u change to MS2? to my knowledge MSB is better than MS2. With MS2 you have to switch manually into reverse?

Sorry for all the questions, only 3 weeks ago i bought a boat (Albin25) and i want to repair most of things myself.

Re: Volvo Penta MSB

Does anyone here know why an MSB will make a high pitched whining/hissing sound when in reverse???

Thank you in advance.

Re: Volvo Penta MSB

This has been a very interesting thread for me. I bought a MD7A several months ago, without a transmission. I was informed by a very reputable Volvo dealer/mechanic that the MSB transmission was the only one that would fit the MD7A, and it only came on the MD6/MD7/MD10 engines. I bought a somewhat complete MD6B to get a transmission. Now I find out that the MD17 series engine take the same tranny, and the MS2 will also work. It really makes me wonder who do you trust, or is my communication so bad that I dont make myself clear? I guess with Internet advice you get what you pay for. Scratching my head.______Grant.
