Transmission Rear Seal Replacement

have a Kanzaki KM3p transmission on a IP 32, the rear seal is leaking, From what I have read, disconnect drive shaft coupling and slide prop shaft back. remove coupling on transmission them remove seal...
if anyone has done this before will I have any surprises doing this with the boat in the water. and does this sound correct.
also any good source for a Kanzaki parts list....

Re: transmission rear seal replacement

I found rear seal was not he source of the leak, the locking nut that holds the coupling to the transmission output shaft came loose ans a O ring under the nut failed. O ring cost $ 1.50

Hope you bought a lottery ticket at the same time you bought the O ring!

Re: Transmission Rear Seal Replacement

I have the same transmission and have noticed a small oil leak from what I thought was the rear seal as well. When I get back to the boat next week I will investigate and see if by chance my o-ring failed as well. In the event that I do have to change the seal can anyone comment on how easy/difficult this procedure is?

Re: Transmission Rear Seal Replacement

what was strange was that I noticed oil coming out of my key way on my prop shaft. Running engine in gear no oil was leaking on rear seal. so what I did was disconnect the transmission coupling, and moved the prop shaft aft, then you can see the nut that holds the coupling to the transmission. the the nut had backed off and the o ring was cut, Note nut is a l/h thread. and is a 30mm, part number of the O ring is 24311 000210
cost 1.58
not sure what kind of stuffing box is on your shaft.
if you have to replace the rear seal there is a good video on doing it,
I have a ipc showing parts, if you should need it, e-mail me

Thank you, I would definitely like the pic and link to video as well I sent you a message with my email address. I have a standard bronze stuffing box on my prop shaft. Also mine seems to be leaking while in gear. I started to notice some oil in the bilge and placed absorbing pads under the engine and transmission. That's how I noticed it was coming from the rear of the transmission. There are also streaks of oil on the side of the hull on either side of the shaft coupling which leads me to believe it's happening while moving. The po had the transmission way overfilled and I didn't catch it until recently. I have read that running it overfilled can cause the seal to blow.
