Re: Too many barnacles. ..best way of preventing

Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated. Will plastic bag with copper scraps in the short term and try the cold galvanized after the haul out.

Copper "scraps" in the bag will do nothing except weigh the bag down. They will not leach copper into the water anymore than copper pipe leaches it into your drinking water. Don't waste your time.

When I was young and sailed, we lined our slips with heavy plastic that opened for the boat exit or supported with a plank when docked. After docking we added about a quart of bleach. No paint, no bottom growth, but more importantly, no EPA.

Re: Too many barnacles. ..best way of preventing

FWIW, I had my prop copper plated about a decade back. It stopped the barnies for maybe a year, certainly no more and it wore off pretty quickly but not as quickly as paints etc.

Main problem was the down time getting it plated - it was weeks not days so this wasn't friendly with slip times .

With most of the water gone, there's little nutrients for anything to grow, and it will do you for 3 months. Then, use the line to pull the bag off (won't have to go in the water for that.

I would try the prop speed again, we've had better success with it than prop gold. The timing is super important for getting the coat on after the primer.

Hey Jim I was next to you in the Gladstone Marina many years ago and you did the plastic bag trick I think you were off home to the states I was amazed at such a simple way to protect your prop. I have had great success with Prop Speed I apply it myself and do the application exactly as the specs say no problems ( I do run the motor in gear every week when in my marina berth for the cyclone season) Cheers Jim enjoy your posts on here

I am impressed with anyone who has copper pipes that do not leach when seawater is run through them. But it is true that copper lasts quite well with fresh water. Of course, in the pure river water it may indeed be a croc. The expense of the scrap, leach-free unalloyed, copper is terrible if you are just scraping by. No harm in brushing off the idea.

I have heard various report on using Lanolin grease on the prop - see other posts on this forum. But this needs to be applied out the water.

A friend said that's all he used for 6 years in the Med, with great success.

I used lanolin grease here in Hawaii when I had the boat on the hard, after 6 months I had barnacles. I think it helped some, and I plan to clean the prop and apply underwater as it might help.

Re: Too many barnacles. ..best way of preventing

I would like to hear form those who use lanolin grease while the boat is in seawater, but the prop is unused. Any noticeable difference between using it an not in the same location for the same period? My suspicion is that axle grease might do the same, if anything is done, but it might get one in deep peanut butter with the environmental authorities. BUT, if lanolin works (and is legal), more power, although I suspect using the prop would be akin to wiping it off.
