Shear Pin in 2-Stroke 15hp Yamaha Outboard...

the last 6 weeks I have been boatsitting on this Morgan60 ...
the big boat was OK, no real probs ...
nice boat to live on anyway ...

but from day 1 the dink was a PITA ...
pump it every 2 or 3 days the owner said, before he left ...

he must have meant 3 times a day ... or 5 times, whatever ...
it was half empty within half an hour ...
but then the outboard ...
15 HP Yamaha 2 stroke ... worked well for a few days ...
nice toy when working right ...

then when driving, all of a sudden speed dropped ...
I didn't know the reason (I'm an RN, remember hahaha) ...
a good, mechanic friend said: prop is slipping ...

the Morgan-owner who is in Europe for 2 months, expected me to buy a new prop and he sent me a long email with instructions how to change the prop ...
yes, in his dreams ...

then another friend said: the owner should put a new shear pin in ...

now the owner wrote me, that the (17 months old) engine is too big for a shear pin ... that not having one was the problem ...

true or not true??? ...

ps: a lot of long plants and barnacles on bottom of the dink ...
a real "beard" ...

the owner is coming back in 2 weeks, so he can drive his "floating carpet" with a non-working outboard himself ...

tnx in advance for any answer ...

Small outboards use a "sear" pin (sorry I couldn't resist) that breaks when you hit something, larger ones use a rubber hub designed to slip if you hit something. Not sure where Yamaha draws the line between the two but am guessing 15 HP will be a rubber hub. If so then the garden you are dragging around will put quite a strain on the rubber hub and it could be slipping, like a worn clutch in a manual shift car trying to go up a steep hill.

Some props are two part and the hub can be replaced. Others are built together and have to be replaced or sent out to a prop shop.

Either way replacing the prop is not to tricky. If stuck on the hook I would give it a go, unless you relish two weeks of isolation.

Have fun,

Skip

my Yamaha 2 stroke 15 was a rubber hub. It started slipping when I gunned it to get up on a plane and I had to replace the prop.... other than that It may have been t he best piece of machinery I ever owned!

the deal was: the last few weeks b4 the owner gets back I only have to run the generator/flush watermaker ... when going back to do those chores I asked friends to pick me up and drop me on the boat ... pick me up again later to take me back to my car ...
I moved back into my house ...

tnx for the answers, it's all clear ...
