Really? Does Nobody Here Know What The Damned Thing is Supposed To Do?

Grease Pump In Stern Gland - Is Using It Like This Ok?
I've noticed that if i give the grease pump into the stern gland a few pumps when ive finished with the engine for a few days, i dont get water in the shaft bilge. Ive always been a bit hazy about how to use the pump, sometimes i give it a few pumps if the engine has been running continuously for a few hours. Anyone able to explain to me exactly what its designed to be used for and whether im gonna do any harm using it the way i have been?

on big fishing boats we generally give half a turn every 3 hours.
over greasing will not do any harm, apart from grease landing in the bilge.

in your case if running 24hrs i would give it a turn 2-3 times a day.
on shut down ,a few turns will stop water leaking out,but you also might need to tighten up the stuffing box from time to time.
the greaser is generally for lubricating sterntubes with bronze bushes.

+1

The grease system is used to stop the water drip during idle periods only

You pump just enough grease to stop the water drip after shutting down for the day or during winter layup

As the above poster said, for a bushing,we used to do 2 grease gun pumps every 4 hrs (we had 4 bushings) + stuffing box on my old boat
