Thats what you think! But it only takes one mistake, maybe a windshift catching you aback, or an awkward wave in light airs.

It can easily be avoided by designing it correctly so it cannot happen.

Can you look at this sketch.

firstly, Where do you propose the axis for the new trim tab tiller go?

Secondly, how long should the handle off the trim tab should be? Does this even matter?

Axis on or near the axis of the rudder itself works for me. Length is a good question. I'd make a first version out of timber, much too long, drill lots of holes and then go out and experiment with the pivot point in different positions and the attachment point of the autopilot ram in different holes. You'll soon get a feel for the best ratio of lengths. Then I would make sure the final product is longer than needed so I had options in the future including attaching a H axis windvane which is going to be so much better than a crappy electronic system.

Matt

Re: Raymarine St4000 with Trim Tab Problem

Hey guys,

Thought you might be interested following from my broken auto pilot GP4000 that occurred whilst I was leaving the RIP. I was surprised today to receive a new GP4000 ram from Raymarine freighted to me. Comes with an extra six months of warrantee.

I admit to being a little surprised myself. I included a letter with a reason why I had opened it up and soldered a wire back on. Must have accepted my explanation I'd even forgotten they had it.
