On Yankee 30 design the engine is set to port of the centerline and the prop is run out more to the starboard side of center to clear the keg for shaft removal..
With that being said it may have been changed to port for other reasons..
Well, I finally had time to disassemble the coupler. As expected it's offset from the transmission to the degree that the strut is bent, confirming that the bend is the strut is through damage not design:
Make sure to check the shaft to see if it got bent also. And check the output shaft at the reverse gear to see if the bearing was damaged. it wouldn't take long to damage the bearing and/or the seal.
be prepared to re-align the engine to the shaft in the process.
Turns out a bit of heat from an acetylene torch and a big pipe wrench were all that was required to get her straightened out. I was lucky in that the strut wasn't cracked and the shaft unbent.
