Perkins 4-108 reverse gear box noise

I've got a Offshore 40' sailboat with a Perkins 4-108 that runs fine in forward gear. However, in reverse gear the gear box area makes a horrible wining noise that scares me. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this noise and if it is a sign that something is about to break, and what, if anything, I should do about it. Cost of repairs?
thanks much

machinery noises are something of a concern on a boat. Can you better identify what reverse gear was mounted to your 4-108?

will take pictures and get ID numbers

I won't be able to get back onto the boat for another four days when I will take pictures and get any numbers to identify this gear box.
thank you

gearbox identification made

Okay, I checked out the gearbox and found some numbers on it which look like a Velvet Drive AS1-7??. I did also see written a "MODE 1-1" . So from what I gather it was one of the first ones made. Hope this helps
thanks

You have a Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission. There should be no noise difference between forward and reverse. If it is in fact a 1:1 ratio transmission, they are easy to come by. Trans Atlantic Diesels has lots of them new and rebuild. Changing out the transmission is rather easy if you have the room to get at it.

Call Sherry, they always have them in stock
be prepared when lifting it out. It's one heavy little unit.
There are oil lines going to a cooler on the side of the engine too.
