Noisy Shaft Bearing

my shaft seal bearing thingy makes a heck of a rumble clatter when going ahead at anything over 1500 rpm's, yet is almost silent at low revs under 1500 or at any revs in reverse. Why is this?

Bearings are shot most likely.

Get them replaced ASAP... it just makes for messy and expensive repairs if you wait.

While your working at it, make sure your shaft is not bent or the prop out of balance. That will cause wear and stress on your bearings, and they can wear out much faster.

No wobbles is a good thing.

Re: Noisy Shaft Bearing

avb3 is most likely right...sometimes a fouled prop can cause a similar rumble/vibration.

Re: Noisy Shaft Bearing

avb3's sense of urgency in addressing the issue is bang on. Sounds like your cutlass bearing is shot and continuing to run under these conditions may result in scoring the shaft which is a spendy fix.
You will have to pull the boat to address the problem. You will need a bearing puller to get the old one out or you can cut the rubber material with a sharp knife and try and worry it out but the puller is a better tool to use IMO.
Take the old one into a marine shop to get the OD/ID sized right and drive the new one in with a wooden mallet.
While the shaft is out, have it trued to make sure it isn't bent. If it is bent and you re-install, it will eventually cause you problems.... cheers, Capt Phil

Re: Noisy Shaft Bearing

I would also get a new transmission coupler, and have it mated to fit the shaft.

Re: Noisy Shaft Bearing

If you have a stern tube with a gland that has a greaser we also see some shaft bearings fail because excessive grease has blocked the water channels leading to bearings running hot unlubricated. So check for excessive grease and that any water feed is not blocked.

If you are buying composite bearings you need to give suppliers the ID of the bearing carrier and the shaft OD. The old bearing is not much help. These are often made as a clearance fit in the carrier. Different bearing manufacturers run different clearances on the carrier.

Check your engine alinement also. That can wear out a bearing fast!
