Name that tranny..

I have a Yanmar 2GM20F with a transmission on it that I have not yet been unable to identify. I think the sticker on top of the transmission "mounting plate" is an export sticker for the engine but I can't see any other plates/stickers on the transmission. The dipstick has an oil residue on it not a red transmission fluid color if that helps anyone identify the model.

Boat is a sovereign 28 from 1984, all direction is ah-pre-she-aided

Re: Name that tranny..

That looks like it could be a technodrive or a kanzaki.

The export sticker is not part of the transmission, that's part of the engine.

Re: Name that tranny..

Yes, very probably a Kanzaki Kokyukoki ヤンマーディーゼル(株)transmission.

Kanzaki Manufacturing started making transmissions for Yanmar in 1956.

Yamaoka Magokichi san (1888-1962) named the transmission company after the district, Kanzaki district of Shiga prefecture, in which he was born. Kanzaki district is now urbanised and part of Higashiomi City.

Mr Yamaoka was born to a poor farming family. He attended four or five years of elementary schooling. At age 15 in 1903, he borrowed Yen 3.60 from his mother and left for Osaka City, promising only to return home when he had made Yen 10,000 (the cultural equivalent of promising to return home once you'd made a million).

Yamaoka returned home in 1918. He had Yen 300,000 in savings, but his company, Yamaoka Engine Works, was then in a slump. In 1921, he renamed his company Yanma. In the early 1930s, Yamaoka turned his attention to small diesel engines. The first Yanma diesel engine ran in 1933.

By the end of WW2, the Yanma engine works had been fairly comprehensively bombed to ruin.

The Yanma company added a terminal -r, making Yanmar, for the export market.

Re: Name that tranny..

Kanzaki KM2C, ..... has the four bolt shifter housing, ala A and C version.

The A version was 2GM and 2GMF. The 2GM20F came with the C version. The KM2P has a two bolt shifter housing. I think the shifter design is the only difference in all versions. All have the same ratio options and bell housing bolt paterns.

Re: Name that tranny..

Thanks for the info, I just found the sticker on the backside showing KM2-A. With your information and since there is no engine sticker, I now believe it is a 2GMF and not a 2gm20F (even though the boat was built in 84" the builder must have used an engine from 83 or older)

More correctly it would be an inboard model with an outboard attached!
