NACA 0010 Section Rudder

Im designing a Schilling rudder based on the NACA 0010 section for a low aspect ratio foil.

I have a pile of data written by David Gerr but most is applicable to planing hulls, sail boats etc. Im looking for something in the full displacement, 5kt range for a 50' hull.

I dont have the mathematical ability to convert data into X Y formulae so please PLEASE be gentle with me

Re: NACA 0010 section rudder

I made a NACA 0010 rudder for my boat last year. Very happy with it. I used the method outlined in this article:

Duckworks - Another Approach to Shaping Foils

If you Google around, you can find a number of different calculators to give you the coordinates for thickness as a function of chord length. You can plot them out by hand, or some programs will spit out a curve for you that you can print.

Here's another helpful article with further links:
http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/07/...naca/index.htm

(Sorry I forget all the different articles I consulted. Long story short: it's not a difficult project, just time-consuming.)

Good luck!

Oh good, thanks

Ive plotted out the co ordinates several times for aircraft wing ribs, thats the easy bit.

Re: NACA 0010 section rudder

anjou, have you looked at articulating rudders. For a boat like yours they might be better (I'm sure they would be) than a straight NACA foil rudder. Here is one link to a video:

Google articulating rudders and you will get lots of hits.

Re: NACA 0010 section rudder

The artic rudder is too complex and prone to damage in a crowded waterway. The Schilling design is the perfect solution. I just need the formulae to produce my size of rudder

When I win the lotto and can afford a tanker, I will get the Becker rudder and Kort nozzle to go with it
