Re: Hurth Transmission Problem Bob Fry

Not a very substantial pin. But in my limited experience with the smaller versions of these boxes they are not very substantial overall. I think in a situation where you inadvertently shift the transmission with the prop still rolling it wouldn't take much to shear the pin.

Actually they are Excelent transmissions (boxes) you seem to be negative with the Hurth Transmission. I have found them to be easy to rebuild and repair.
The pin does not shear, only the tension spring looses force and the transmission clutches will not hold in place.

Re: Hurth Transmission Problem Bob Fry

Have twin engines both with ZF Hurth HBW100
27hp 3cyl kubota based engines.

Both gearboxes died within 50hrs of each other
350-400hrs.
Case hardening came off the face of the teeth.
I would advise against using this brand.
My opinion of then is
1/. Over priced
2/ poor design
3/. Unreliable
4/. Poorly built
5/ warranty not worth the paper it is written on

Have now gone to twin disc, don't have enough
Hrs to have an opinion on them yet,
But they are significantly cheaper.
Even if they only last 400hrs they are
Still far better value for your $ than ZF

ZF was far from helpfull during this issue.
From what ZF told me it appears that the ZF
warranty starts the minute they are built!!!!!!
Not from the purchase date or install date.
Had to buy a new box in the middle of a
trip, this gearbox was a couple of years old
but still new.
ZF would not give a warranty, despite being
purchased from a ZF dealer.

I WILL NEVER BUY A ZF HURTH PRODUCT AGAIN.
