Hurth HBW 250 Dipstick Needed

Rather strange problem but somehow the dipstick became separated from the screw in plug and fell down inside the transmission. As a result I had no reverse. I was able to extract the old dipstick and the transmission works fine now but the old dipstick is bent. I spoke to Transatlantic Diesels in Va and they said they could order one for $92 and it would take about 30 days. Im thinking there aught to be a used one out there somewhere? Or maybe someone could measure the length and I can just fab my own?

The HBW 250 take .75 Ltr's of ATF fluid.
I would drain the existing fluid and measure the distance to the top of the fluid from the outside edge of the case at the dip stick hole thread.
Thread a rod to fit in the dip stick hole.
Weld a rod to the rod about 20mm lower that the height of the atf in the case.
Hoping this helps

I think, maybe, that the Hurth dipstick contains the vent as well...without which all the fluid will be forced out the lower seals in a short time. Consider this if you make a replacement.

Not so strange. The same thing just happened to me. How did you get the dipstick out?

The side cover where the shift cable attaches comes off with 4 bolts. I was able to fish out the dipstick through there pretty easily. Cleaned mating surfaces and reinstalled with a little gasket sealant. I straightend the bent dipstick in a vice then welded it back to the plug/bolt.

We might be a long way away in the UK but you can try:
Both reliable suppliers and both deal with ZF gear boxes.

Re: Hurth HBW 250 Dipstick Needed

Thanks for your help. I couldn't extract the dipstick from the side as my transmission is an HBW 50 and there wasn't a whole lot of room to fish around. However, I must have pushed it back towards the dipstick hole as I was able to, after many tries, retrieve it through there with a magnet. Fishing around with a magnet from the side also allowed me to clean out a lot of metal shavings from the mangled dipstick.

Glad you were successful. I was not when I tried with a magnet. Fortuantely my dipstick did not get too chewed up though. I was able to straighten and reinstall in the plug. Had a friend weld the dipstick to the plug to prevent this from happenening again.
