Formosa, One or two Cutlass bearings

Our boat is a Hardin seawolf, 40ft ketch and I'm putting in a new cutlass bearing. I've been told that there maybe two bearings, the other behind the stuffing box. Getting the stern one out was a pig of a job and I dread to think I may have to do another in the most awkward of places. The pipe on the backside of the stuffing box that connects to the pipe that holds the shaft looks well and truly sealed up with some sort of sealant as well as the usual two pipe clips. If I don't need to disturb this I would rather leave well enough alone. So my question is; Has anybody out there done this job on a Hardin Sea wolf, or as I understand it, on a CT 41, or perhaps a Formosa as I think they're all the same hull design. Are there two bearings or just the one?

Oh man....

Having another cutless stuffed up there would truly suck.... If there were, I might almost call it a day and simply replace the rear one you have out....

zeehag here has a 41 Formosa .... she might know for sure

Re: Formosa, One or two Cutlass bearings

our boats are same. shaft log external on hull contains cutlass. shaft tube from that to beam with packing gland.
should be straightforward and not too hard to temove without destruction of anything.
replacing shaft tube is a bitch. goes thru concrete
the rest is accessable.
packing gland below dinette aft bench.
leaky teaky yacht club has pix n arrows with paragraph on back. see my siggy.

Do not want to offend anyone, but it is a 'cutless' bearing not 'cutlass' (sword).
Dry sailing to all cutless owners.

Re: Formosa, One or two Cutlass bearings

Thanks Zeehag, had an engineering friend check this out with me today and confirmed there's on the stern cutlass, sorry Cutless bearing so that's a blessing. was a day and a half to saw it out so don't want to do that too often. see our blog at The adventures of Picaroon | or a story of two novice sailors seeking adventure before dementia

Cheers folks

is a shame you cut it. have you found the attachment points on the hull for the shaft log yet??
the shaft log which BOLTS to the hull contains your bearing.
replacement should be intetesting.
