Edson Wheel Removal

How do I remove the Edson wheel from my 1979 C&C 34 sailboat? I have removed the plastic cover and see a square hole under the cap near the shaft.

Do you want to remove the wheel or the binacle. The wheel on my boat is held on by a nut. the binacle requires removal of the compass. Did you look at the Edson website lots of good info.

After removing the nut (cap?) you can pull the wheel off. You might need a gear-puller to do that without damaging it when it's stuck.

The square hole near the shaft is probably where the key fits.
