Turns out gear shift was not engaging fully.Transmission rear mounts had been modified ,to fit into bilge when boat was repowered, resulting in shift alignment bracket being in wrong position.Rebuild; $1800. Still have to resize prop also.

I have a Hurth HBW 150 on my Westerbeke W46. It has always rattled in nuetral, crunched when going into gear, and then is smooth as silk. Various Hurth techs have told me this is because of the type of gears used. Can't remember if they are straight cut or helical.
