Dripless Stern Gland Maintenance

Hi,
I have a Northshore 27 yacht with a shaft drive.
The stern gland is a dripless type which I don't recognise and was wondering if anybody recognises it and can tell me the brand and how to service it.
It was fine until a recent slipping and I loosened it to make sure there was no air lock and now it is leaking about 4 litres per day.
Thanks in anticipation,
Steve

I think M.E. is close to the mark. It doesn't look like a "dripless" style to me, more like a standard style packed gland.

Have you tried to tighten the two white hex flanges a little more?

Yep, not a dripless. More like a home made standard packing gland. I think I would consider a replacement as soon as possible. Those plastic pieces can easily crack or split or the threads strip easily, especially if you over tighten them. Chuck

Re: Dripless Stern Gland Maintenance

It seems an odd setup considering the two hex nut are pinned together meaning you would have to make one full turn to allow the pin holes to line up.

Re: Dripless Stern Gland Maintenance

This has to be the worst designed stern gland ever. A disaster waiting to happen. One full turn for holes to align??? Either too tight or too loose. No idea of the quality of teflon or if it is teflon. This could sink yer boat. The guy who designed this should have drowned himself.

Yep,

It's a DIY'er Kludge.

I never can be completely be amazed by a DIY'er Kludge.

BUT THIS TAKES THE CAKE. I am now amazed.

IF there was a WORLD HALL of FAME for Kludges, This would be at the top.

Actually the folks at Hunter could probably tell you exactly who made that gland as they used a slew of them over the years. They are not a drip less design. I think the company is now defunct but they were factory made and factory installed by Hunter and some others...

Re: Dripless Stern Gland Maintenance

Hi Maine Sail, the two black things in the middle look like common lip seals. Is this correct?

Standard packing rings... I remembered the company and those packing glands were a Glenwood Marine product.... There are usually two rings of packing separated by nylon washers...
