Covering Prop Blades

I have been looking for a way to stop barnacle buildup on our prop blades.
Was away from the boat some months and tried a plastic garbage bag tied around the prop, but that fell to bits.
Am wondering whether an old sock over each blade might work.
Has anyone got any proven solutions following this general principle?

G'day, Richard. A mate down here in N.Z. did the plastic bag trick and had success, about 6 months on the mooring. I have routinely used the Propspeed over the last 10 years that Bash suggested. I get roughly 2 years before I have to start seriously scrapping the prop again. Cheers.

Yes, I have used Propspeed in the past and it really impressed me, but this time the weather was too iffy to put it on, so for the next couple of years we have a prop to scrape!

If not using the prop - then grease (Vaseline?!)........of course over here with the tide going out twice a day the easy answer is to scrape 'em off now and again.

Our answer? We employ a full-time Commercial Diver, and send him in to scrape the props before every race. I'm not kidding.

We put on "lots" of ablative bottom paint, then go 4 or 5 years between "expensive" haulouts.
Is there any reason we couldn't put on 5 coats of Propspeed, and get this kind of lifespan? M.

I have never tryed that multy layer method and do not see anything like that in the instructions.

May have to do some e-mails to PropSpeed on that topic.

Why would we think you're kidding? Hull cleaning is an industry, here in the States.

Boeshieild-a Boeing product. Clean prop to bright finish, and every day we are up, spray on and massage onto blade surface. After 2 yrs, the thin coral coat lifts off like a banana peel.
I get it from my Interlux guy.

Using the prop works pretty well too.

I can see many outdrives here in bags. Owners claim it helps.

Of course not

The plastic bags work but obviously you need the type that is NOT biodegradable. I have greased my prop which also worked (until you use it so have to do it again afterwards).

I wonder how the Boeshield is applied... you spray it on for 2 years under water? And then the growth peels off? I need more instructions
