Confirm Gear Ratio

How do I confirm my gear ratio on my V-drive.

My boat is out of the water. I'm thinking that if I loosen my injectors, put it in gear, then I should be able to turn my drive shaft and cause my motor to turn over without too much difficulty.
I could then compare revolutions of my drive shaft to crank shaft.

Will this work?
Is there a better way?

Thanks for any help.

Usually there is plate or a stamp that the manufacturer put in place in the transmission that says the transmissions gear ratio. It may be a code or it may say it right there. Your way will work, unless its a hydraulic transmission (it slips). If its a wet or dry clutch turning it manually will work although turning the engine is the hard way of going about it. If turning it manually is your only alternative, I would turn it with a large socket wrench and not try to turn it with the starter motor. This will give you much more control. Turn it in the direction the engine normally turns.

Why?

There should be a plate on the vessel's engine or transmission or the mfr. should have the info.

Turn engine from Front of engine....not the shaft.

If it's a Walters V-drive call them with the serial number and they will tell you. Mine was 1.67:1 with a 1.75:1 trans ratio. when i repowered the trans available was 2:1 so I had Walters change the V to 1:1.

First, to speak to the earlier posts. I cannot find a serial # ANYWHERE!
I don't believe this makes sense, but I can't.

I want to buy an AutoProp and with that sort of investment, I would like to triple confirm that I have all the right info before purchase.

Make sense?

Regards,
Extemp.

If you are not the original owner, do some detective work on any old receipts.

Otherwise call www.waltergear.com

Genuine Factory Parts
Walter Machine maintains a large stock of V-Drives and parts for quick shipment. Please call 201-656-5654 or fax 201-656-0318 with the V-Drive Serial Number for more information. The serial number must accompany all requests for replacement gear drives, parts, or information (the model number is not sufficient). The serial number is stamped on the serial plate in addition to the model number and gear ratio. The serial plate is a brass plate the size of a business card, rivetted onto the main V-Drive case; the numbers are stamped into the plate; normally sanding with a light sandpaper will remove paint exposing the numbers. If the serial plate has been removed, please fill out the Identification Sheet below.

Thanks Chief.

I have done much research and will do more. That said, can't argue with counted circles (unless there is slippage of course).

I would have someone crank the engine 10 revolutions

while someone watched the prop.

a cellphone or walkie talkie would be helpful here.

This can't be good, however, I'm sure there is some mistake?
