Borg Warner 71C rebuild

Hi, I have my Engine & Trans out and tought I might as well get the trans rebuit. It's working fine but it's very old and I don't want to have to repeat pulling it out. Can anyone recomend someplace in Michigan to have that done and what should it cost, roughly? Thanks

Marysville Marine Distributors in Marysville MI is the Michigan distributor for BW gearboxes.

Re: Borg Warner 71C rebuild

Harbor Marine in Everett, Washington is the largest BW rebuild shop on the west coast. You could call them and inquire who they recommend on the east coast, also get an idea on current pricing. One thing you can do is pull your tranny off the back of the motor and look at the coupling that connects the engine output shaft to the transmission. If worn, it’s likely internal parts will be worn also. As I (vaguely) remember there are three or so slots in the coupling that can go bad over time. It’s a good tip off about rebuilding or not.

If not, be very careful about aligning the shaft with the transmission when you reinstall the engine. If the alignment is out more than .002” - .003” you will damage the transmission seals and bearings, causing lots of premature wear to the trans clutch plates etc. leading to an untimely demise of your newly rebuilt reverse gear.

I went through all this with my BW a few years ago. Not a big deal to do a rebuild or the alignment, just needs to be done with care.
