Anybody used Pettit Prop Coat Barrier Spray

Has anybody used the Pettit Prop Coat Barrer Spray on their propellor?

What are the results?

Is is just snake oil?

How about using it on the gears of folding props?

Works fairly well. Not going to last on geared parts however. But nothing would.

I tried a good quality galvanizing spray, Rust-
Oleum, which shows the same ingredients as the Pettit (for a hellofalot le$$) but I still got barnacles on the prop, so I've given up on the spay thing.

It seems them creatures can stick to anything, except Teflon. I'm in the yard right now and when I scraped the lil buggers off the bottom they had actually went thru the layer of bottom paint and attached themselves to the barrier coat. The best thing is to just keep the boat moving.

Maybe they are both snake oil. I'd love to try prop speed (I've tried everything else) but I don't have any rich boating uncles leaving me any in their wills.

And I sure ain't dropping $250 to test it...

G'Day Dan,

Even here in expensive Oz one can usually get enough Propspeed to do one prop for around 30 AUD. How? Just make friends with someone who applies it and buy a small portion of the 300 dollar kit that they buy. The "official" applicators do a smoke job about how difficult it is to apply the stuff, but that's BS. Simple to do, follow the directions in the box, works a treat.

We hear that there is now a competitor coating, similar in nature, that will be sold over the counter at "reasonable" prices. Have not seen it yet, but if it is true, perhaps that will break down the Propspeed monopoly and make good coatings readily available.

I dunno about your particular part of the world... may be more awkward there.

I keep bringing it up in bar conversation. have yet to find anyone admitting to have some or willing to share...

But really around here people pay like US$80 / month for a bottom diver...

I've used it on my Flex-O-Fold prop.

I would say it worked well enough the 2 years I used it. This year the store was out of it so I tried a regular zinc primer and will see if it is better/worst/same.

Prop Speed $210 works great and is easy to apply as DIY. It last two years. Its a bear to re-apply as you have to strip everything down to bare metal and start over.
A small kit will easily cover four 17inch dia. 3 bladed props.

Pettit Prop Coat Barrer Spray seams to work OK, but chips off in a few places $22

Rust-Oleum galvanizing spray seams to work OK, but chips off in a few places $5

For the money Rust-Oleum galvanizing spray gets my vote.

I used it and was a little dismayed to see stuff slowly growing on the prop. But when we took our boat out of the water to replace so seacock there was nothing attached to it at all. It seems some plant life could grow on it, but I didn't see any creatures. I imagine that if I knew what I was doing and followed directions better it would have been an even better result.

A few years back used Pettit Prop Coat and had poor results, seemed to wash off real fast, later years (not a lot of options out there) it holds up much better and works very well.

I get about a year and a half out of Prop Speed without cleaning the prop. My boat has a semi-displacement hull and before Prop Speed was applied the fasted I ever saw on the GPS was about 15.5 knots. When I came out of the yard with Prop Speed the boat hit 16.3 and the engine was turning a few more RPM than I had ever seen.

I applied it in November 2012 in St. Marys, GA. It worked better than bottom paint on the prop for 8 months after 600 miles of motoring south and then back up to Savannah, GA. I'll use it again.

Is there a Teflon spray or coating that could be used?
