Women in Boats..and how to become one

Wanted to give you sailing ladies, or wannabe sailing ladies, a heads-up.

The irrepressible Pam Wall, circumnavigator, sailing Mom, mentor to thousands and great friend, is hosting another Women on the Water Week early 2018. She is determined to teach and inspire women to take to the water and feel confident on a sail boat and she will do so in a testosterone-free, supportive environment. Check out her blog...and sign up!

Another Women on the Water Week with Pam Wall at Bitter End Yacht Club – February 6 through February 11, 2018

Wifey just attended Pam's Annapolis sessions, and has spoken very highly about how good/useful the presentations were.

why do women need some special sort of "coaching" to get into sailing and so on?

They don't need it...some just might like the idea.

Thumbs up! However, I don't think women need more encouragement then e.g. getting a driving license.

I think it is a great idea as it provides an organized feminine perspective of living on a boat without the bravado that most male sailors resort to when confused.

Some women prefer to sail without men...... Most women I know enjoy learning to sail in a testosterone free zone.

Some of the responses from men to this thread show exactly why many women would appreciate a women-only sailing class.

Marry rich or take some sailing classes and buy a boat. If the latter, take some self defense classes as well. Women are sometimes targeted in port. That's particularly true outside of the US.

Women both learn, & interact much differently than do men. Especially in a "stressful" environment. You can yell at a guy, & usually 2 min later there are no reprecussions or ill will. But if you do that with some women, it could & has completely turned that person away from sailing (or whatever you were trying to teach them).

There's a LOT of good information on the topic in this thread --> http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ng-161019.html

Berating someone for something which they obviously don't know, nor were never taught isn't going to help the situation at all. For you, other women, or men. Rather, it'll probably do the opposite. Where as explaining things so that all parties understand usually will go a long way towards good communications, & a positive learning environment. Non?

With this kind of comment, you're kind of acting exactly the way in which a lot of people, women in sailing especially, hate being treated. But if you explain some of the why's behind the benefits of women being taught sailing by other women, then most likely everyone would benefit (both genders).
Getting the response you want is all in the approach, for good or for bad. Including when teaching sailing, or discussing teaching it.

.
She's not wrong, though. Why would a guy on a boating forum care enough to comment on why a woman wants a service she willingly buys on the open market? Or more precisely...why would the same guy repeatedly 'care' on multiple threads relating to increasing the number of female sailors? Probably not because he's looking for gentle words and persuasive essays.

It is a mistake to think all men are dicks and all women are in need of supportive environments--the converse is equally a mistake.
