What is a Normal Tip for an Instructor at a Sailing Course

I am taking a sailing course and understand from my paper work that a tip is probably expected for my instructors. I will have two one for 2 days and another for 4 days. I have no idea how to figure the normal tip. Any suggestions?

Yep. Don't do it. Folks often tip the crew of our dive boats but never the scuba instructors. This tipping thing has gotten absurd. I'm seeing tip jars in convenience stores!

Our sailing club teaches sailing at all levels, ASA certified, and neither expect or solicit tips. The instructors are not paid either. All fees go to the club.

You say the paperwork encourages tips?

What's the practice for tipping your doctor, CPA, lawyer, dentist, and car salesman? Tipping is getting out of hand.

the exact verbiage is "if you feel that your instructor provided a high quality of service a gratuity will be very much appreciated. The quality of service should dictate any gratuity.'

Do you consider the person a service employee or a professional?

I'd give him a tip: Horse 12 in the Kentucky Derby. Can't lose, mate.

Don't tip. MarkP has it dead on with the distinction between service employees and professionals. Naturally, everyone feels they are professional so consumers have to make the distinction.

I've often wondered why we've allowed business owners to pay their help so poorly that we feel obliged to tip them.

Re: What is a Normal Tip for an Instructor at a Sailing Course

I was recently recruited by a sailing "school" for the position of mate. It was made clear to me that it was not a paid position but tips were possible. The guy seemed like a shady character, wanted me to charter his boat for a day so I could show him I knew how to sail. I never called him back.

Any of you ever tip the mate on fishing charters? The person tending to the rods and fish? I do, well in fact, and I thought it was pretty standard. Is there a difference here? If anyone gets a tip, it's the guy actually sailing the boat, not the licensed instructor.

Good afternoon:

I would react quite negatively to any suggestion from the organization providing the course that I was EXPECTED to give the instructors a tip and would probably not tip them because of this annoyance.

I would be paying for the provision of a service and would expect the instructors to be paid by the organization providing the service/course without expecting me to make up for their inadequate salary or remuneration.

If however the instructors provided services over and above those expected I would be happy to acknowledge this with a tip and the amount would be determined by how impressed I was with the extra services.

Regards
