Sea Time for USCG Captains License

I crewed on a boat for 3 weeks recently. The captain is not responding to my requests to document sea time. Any suggestions?

make it easy for him... fill out the USCG form so all he has to do is sign it... include a post-paid return envelope... stick it in a certified mail, return receipt requested (so you'll know he got it)... and if that doesn't work, find a lawyer to send a letter with the same USCG form as before

Not that it's right, but letters from an attorney can get expensive quick (trust me I bill for them). For three weeks of sea time it may be worth it, but it isn't going to be cheap to sue on something like this.

Is the captain a licensed one? If not he may not be aware of how much you need the letter. If he is commercial, then it's likely you are just at the bottom of his priority list... Get in touch with the boats agent, or commercial operator and ask for the letter that way. They tend to be much better at shuffling paperwork.

I have a question too about captain's license. Not wanting to take over this thread so I'll be short. I have had a heart attack. Does that eliminate me from getting a license? I am in good health Only had stents put in.

Try searching the web. Here is an example; http://www.adamsmarine.com/news.html
Or http://www.maritimeinstitute.com/downloads.html

As for sea time, you should keep a personal log and have the captain sign it before checking out/off the vessel.

regarding stents: you'll need a release letter from your cardiologist, probably a recent stress test result also

Before you turn it over to the lawyer, try a thank you letter... "Dear Captain, thank you for giving me the opportunity to get boat time. I have enclosed a box of chocolates and a West Marine Gift Card to thank you. I apologize that I forgot to have you sign the enclosed form before I left your vessel, but I'd really appreciate if you could sign it and mail it to me in the enclosed envelope."

Fill out the form for him and mail it to him in a stamped self addressed envelope. It he still dies not sign fun it it without his signature. The USCG will accept it anyway as long as the bulk of your other sea time is well documented.

Why would you think the captain has a legal obligation to sign that form?

Re: Sea Time for USCG Captains License

Thanks for all your replies. Patience and letting it go were the two things that worked for me. The captain ended up sending the signed paperwork.
