RYA Day Skipper Practical Sail, Solent (UK) Based - recommendations please
Hi all,
Nearing the end of her Theory course and taking the exams soon, SWMBO is looking for a Solent-based sailing school (UK) to sign up for her DS Practical Sail, intending to do it in the five day format rather than at the weekends, hopefully some time in April.
Schools suggested so far include Nomad, Southern, Ocean Adventure and Solent Boat Training.
Can anyone recommend any of these schools - they are unknown to me - and/or recommend any others, from experience?
Prices seem to vary between £399 and £625 with no clear indicator as to what you get - or don't get - for your money.
We'd be most grateful for any advice the panel could give

Hi. Since no one else submitted. I am looking for a school in The Solent, too. I had some success with TripAdvisor and yelp. Not much but a start. If you do get some solid recommendations please post.

Hi - had no luck here with recommendations. I suspect that is due to the fact that this forum is rather more geared for the American scene.
I posted the same question on Yachting Monthly's forum and had some good responses.
Day Skipper Practical Sail, Solent Based - suggestions/recommendations please...
In the end, she completed her DS Practical with Sea Jay's Solent Sailing School at Lymington. They seem a friendly bunch and she enjoyed the week.
Hope that helps and good luck.

Hi
If you/she do not intend to do the course until April, a visit to the boat show in April may be a good idea.
There will be many, but by no means all, schools there. Talk to them, and ask what is included.
Bad weather lilies?
Mooring fees?
What meals?
Is it advisable to do a DS course at the same time as other student(s) are doing Yacht Master exam ?

If you would consider going north of London a bit instead of south
I highly recommend the Shearwater Sailing School in Ipswich
Great instructors, Bev is a great female instructor as I know some women
Learn better when taught by other women.
Might be a better area then the Solent with less traffic to worry about
thus more practice time
Cheers
What is a SWMBO?

Thanks guys - in fact this thread is pretty old now. Since posting, SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) completed her Day Skipper course with Sea Jay's Sailing School at Lymington and enjoyed the week.
We've since crossed The English Channel to France and spent three weeks cruising France and The Channel Islands
