RYA courses in Australia

Hi There
A couple of friends and myself have recently purchased a 2015 Lagoon 450 Catamaran and it is currently in charter in the Whitsundays. The plan is to leave it in charter for the next three years ,sailing it about 3 weeks a year around those islands and to gradually upgrade it to cruising standard. After that time we plan to sail it around the south pacific for a year. In order to get insurance we will need to get at least an RYA coastal skipper qaulification.
We can do the courses in Melbourne but im looking for someone who is certified to teach the RYA courses who would be prepared to teach us on our boat in the whitsundays. We would do all the online components before the sailing component.
I would appreciate a reply from anyone who could be interested.

cheers

Colbud

Re: RYA courses in Australia

I would suggest you contact the Whitsunday Sailing Club in Airlie Beach. They offer a range of YA certified courses.

Re: RYA courses in Australia

Thanks Greg
I have contacted them and they are on the lookout for a suitable person.
There are quite a few courses offered but at this stage the are all on monohulls run by the companies offering the course. We are looking for someone willing to do the course on our boat which is a large cat.
It may not be possible but it would certainly be more relevant and comfortable if we can.

Are you sure? What insurer in Aus is imposing that condition?

Flying fish are good and can do aything from basics to fast track YM. Not bin to there base in Oz but at the Uk they had lots of instructors on call. May be worth getting touch as they keep an extenive register of ex students who have gone on to professional careas and may be able to put you in touch with someone wh can do what you want. Even without the insurence requirement getting up to caostal skipper is a very good intro to the skill you need and well worth doing.

Yachting Directions specialise in Catamaran tuition and are an RYA Training Centre. They have an instructor in Airlie Beach who can help with "own boat tuition". web address: yachtingdirections.com.au or contact 0249408062.

Skipper quals before insurance? That is something I haven't heard of before, although I guess my insurer did ask for previous experience which, thanks to the navy and previous yachts, I had plenty of. Checked other insurer's requirements? Having said that, you can never get too much support and instruction prior to learning the hard way.
