On-Line course on marine weather

Can anyone recommend an on-line or DVD course on marine weather? Topics such as reading weather charts, getting weather faxes, reading cloud formations, etc.

Hi DMK,

There was a fairly recent discussion on this forum answering many of your questions.

If you have additional questions after absorbing that information, I'm sure many knowledgable folks will jump in and help.

Enjoy!

Bill

Canada Power and Sail Squadrons offer self study courses. I did some when I was overseas: Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons - Escadrilles canadiennes de plaisance; you do the material at your own pace, and then do the exam with them, or a 3rd location with a "trusted agent."

US Power Squadrons offer online courses. Here is the one on weather: Weather for Boaters Course

Re: On-Line course on marine weather

There is no separate marine weather and you simply get educated in meteorology and then focus on the parts that are important to you (like weather over oceans and seas and on the interface).

When I needed some extra training (I got my meteo basics back at school) I used courses at UCAR. They were online, free and absolutely fantastic.

They were worth every second of my study time.

Enjoy your time in the digital classroom and on the water!

Cheers,
b.

I have spent some time on the site.

Lots of information there and it is a great resource.

I do think that if someone is just starting in the weather/meteorology world from scratch it could be overwhelming. Not sure.

The site makes you register, but it is free. It seems geared to gov't employees as it asks you if you are from <big long list> but has "weather enthusiast" and "other" as the last two options.

There is event an option to have your test scores sent to your boss.

You can run through the subject online or download them for offline review. Likely quite useful for those with spotting access.

Go to the education and Training tab and select "Coastal x or Oceanography/Marine Met and it will list all the relevant subjects for you.

Surprising that it is freely available.

Yep.

Anyone who is a beginner can take off by reading the Wikipedia. UCAR is more specific. The two do not really overlap BUT they do complement each other.

I think today it is important to find a balance between what we know and what is being provided prêt-à-porter. There is no longer any need to learn so many things with computer generated data that has probability way above even the best weathermen's guesses. But with the amount of information available, we are faced with a new dilema: what is important and worth learning and what is not.

Free as GPS. And as good as. Say thanks to uncle Sam.

Have fun reading your sky.

Re: On-Line course on marine weather

I would really recommend "Modern Marine Weather" at Starpath School of Navigation Title Page

I have taken both their Celestial and Marine Weather courses. As an airline pilot, I already had a background in meteorology and found the marine course to be excellent. It explains how to exploit the modern advantages of weatherfax and email grib files but also discusses how to determine the accuracy of the provided forecasts based on what you are currently experiencing at sea, with nothing more than a barometer and anemometer.

I have been sailing for over 40 years, flying for almost 30 and I learned a lot from this course. The Power Squadron stuff is fluff in comparison.

"Weather for New Zealand Fisherman", it's an NZed government publication that discusses both weather maps and cloud formations; in addition, it talks about what changes in swell direction mean. Southern hemisphere, though.
