Check with the local sailing clubs, yacht clubs, even the Coast Guard may have info. In New Orleans, Murray Yacht sales sponsors sailing classes. I am not sure where their office in Florida is but you can check local yacht sales to see if they know of any.

US Sail and ASA have programs all over the US. They both do certified instructors and offer a range of classes up to offshore training. They do hands on and class room stuff. They teach the full spectrum starting with the first class.

For any class ask to meet the instructor first. They don't get rich doing this. They usually have real jobs on the side. The basic keel boat class is a good start. Best to do more sailing ASAP after the course. It gives you good habits with a well rounded beginning. Can't be emphasized enough that the good start makes you think smarter and gets you having fun sooner. When you are good, you'll have even more fun. Both these organizations do adults and are fun.

Our club does 10 years olds and is a whole other deal. More like a week of day camp. They have fun but they don't take off for parts unknown all that soon.

Re: Looking for good sailing courses in Tampa, Florida

You wont learn much between now and the 27th. Unless you sail on a different type of boat everyday 24/7 lol. Its a complex sport/passtime with so many variables that depending on your goals takes many years to master.

Having said all that, classes are the best way. Try to learn on boats similar in size and design to your fantasy boat (assuming your going to buy one) or similar to the boat your chartering (if that is why the rush is on).

The basic skills you will get over the next few weeks will be the gounding for everything else to come and at worst you will be able to make a competant crew for another skipper. While your doing your classes, see if you can get a ride on a few race boats out of your local sailing cub. This will help you a lot and give you a feel for a variety of boats.

either way, good luck and fair winds

Hi. New to the site. Let us all know what you are looking to accomplish with your sailing (weekends, lifetime cruising, racing, etc). Then maybe we can send you off on the right direction.

I'm in St Petersburg.
