Also,the government over here dosen't tax TIPS.So where would you get the word"Gratuities"to start with.If the government tax a gift of gratuity then the person giving the tip should be able to claim it on their tax return.Mudnut.

I suspect that you can tip anyone anywhere anything if you desire. For doing sailing instruction it should not be expected by the instructor. It also should not be mentioned in a sailing brochure advertising sailing instruction. Very tacky in my point of view.

I once tipped a Doctor (a cardiologist) in Mexico, after he made a “house call” to examine Maggie’s perforated ear drum - then went and picked up & returned with the prophylactic antibiotic he prescribed.

Maggie was nearly as embarrassed as the Doctor. I was oblivious to my gaucherie.
Apparently, a simple, but sincere “thank you” suffices with professionals ...
