Best of luck on the exam!

Did you use any prep material? How was the application process?

Re: Captains License

Good luck on the exam. Is that the Commercial Assistance towing endorsement or the Towing endorsement? I liked to use Seasources.net to take practice quizzes when I was upgrading.

Re: Captains License

That would be Commercial Assisted Towing. You can get that with a 6-pack license. That means you can tow other boats for money. A Towing Endorsement is for tugboats and that takes sea time as steersman on a tugboat of the tonnage you are trying to get.

Re: Captains License

I didn't post an update. Passed my test back in April. Have all my sea service logs, character form, and application done. Just waiting for my TWIC, and will take physical and drug test May 18th.

July 11th taking my master upgrade with sailing and towing endorsement.

So hopefully a few weeks after my July 11th test will submit everything with my processing fee.

Snatched up the domain Coast Guard Captain and will use this wordpress site to document all the things I do under my coast guard captain license, and hopefully get customers to leave me comments.

Looking to put everything under and LLC incorporation, and then get contracts setup, and insurance policies.

Re: Captains License

Quick update. Thinks are progressing nicely. Have been studying for master upgrade, sailing, & towing endorsement. Reviewed my sea time and I have 97 days of ocean, so hopefully get coastal.

Getting the Columbia 34 in shape. Booked for power boat lessons tomorrow, sailing lessons on Saturday, then power boat lessons next Thursday on lake union, and delivery of a navigator 48 across the straights next Friday. At this rate I could be doing this stuff full time which is were I want to be.

Why would you do that? It's ridiculously hard to get it back if you were anywhere above entry level.

Congrats to the OP, keep living the dream. I love sailing commercially.

Not good, to get it back you have to start over again.
Big pain in the butt...
I was out of boating for a while and let my ticket expire.
Took a new course 16 years ago and been renewing religiousy even if I don't
need the license for work. Keeping it as an insurance policy.

Congrats, mackconsult. Frankly, I am amazed that no one already had the domain coastguardcaptain.com.

Re: Captains License

I'm thinking of renewing for "continuity" this time. I hold a USCG 1600/3000 ton license but currently work ashore in a maritime mgmt position. Renewing in this way relieves one of retaking the STCW and Radar classes but maintains your file with the USCG. Returning to active will require getting up to date with any changes in requirements subsequent to the time you went to "continuity" status.

To get Near Coastal, you need 720 total days, 360 of which must be on Near Coastal or, new this year, Great Lakes waters. I'm a Great Lakes sailor with a Great Lakes license, and only a few ocean days. This year I get to upgrade to Near Coastal. First time I've ever seen them give a freebee like that.
