Just register the boat in Canada with an obscure hailing port, and never bring it here. That way you'll avoid federal taxes until you bring the boat into Canada.

Make sure there are no leins or taxes owing against the title. That can be a contributing factor to big price reductions. Not always, but sometimes too good to be true is just that.

Google Canadian small boat registry (you can get the forms you need, and the process) you have the right to move about as a Canadian vessel.......if you enter Canada you have to pay the taxes on the boat.....this is very commonly done, now as a Canadian boat in Europe you have limited time unless you can prove VAT was paid, if it was, no problem if not it may be do after a certain time in the EU......

Do read though all the VAT receipts, often there are more than one if stage payments were made as the boat was built. Also any extras that were ordered during the build will have VAT receipts. I have at least 12, photocopies on board and originals safely stored away at home.

Exciting times, good luck

Leave it UK registered. It’s still vat paid in Europe.
Declare it when you get to Canada.
You can register in Canada but the tax man will eventually send you a letter. With a bill.
Which is ok you just have to reply the boats has not entered Canada yet. Or as I did send a letter including the date and receipt from when I entered Canada.

I bought min in the US. Declared on entry and paid on entry. I registered the boat some time latter but registering without paying tax at the same time apparently triggered some kind of response.
Just an irritating problem.

Thanks. Ok keep registered in U.K. So just go with owner to Malta Registration Center. Bill of sale individual form signed by transferor in presence of Commissioner of oaths? Afraid of pay and get ripped off.. How does that work? Have a lawyer in Montreal does it. Need them? Thanks.

BTW... You don't need to be certified to sail around Malta.

Hi.. I assume this is a private sale/purchase else the broker would handle all this including checking for liens on the boat. If it is a Part 1 UK registration it will state on there if any liens are outstanding, if SSR it means nothing as this Reg is not proof of ownership.. also you will not be able to keep it UK flagged not being a UK resident and the current owner is obliged to deregister the boat when he sells it.
You have several registration options, register in Canada where you have no taxes to pay till the boat arrives in the country or you could go the flag of convenience route.. Gibraltar is a popular choice and a pretty simple process that can be done online.. Gibraltar Yacht Registry - Small Ships Register
The advantage with Gibraltar is you get to keep the Red Ensign which tends not to get second looks.
Regarding the transfer of ownership.. there should be plenty of experienced marine lawyers in Malta as it also used to be/still is a flag of convenience country so that's a path to consider.
Best of luck..
