This has been an interesting and amuzing thread to read. I guess if we really wanted to be serious about boating and minimizing the carbon footprint we leave we should take only a hand saw and an axe, go out into the woods by a bay and build are selves boats hewn from the forest. In other words go back in time about 800 years. Skins for sails and all. I don't think that this is going to happen anytime soon. So while we are in this world we do the best we can with what we have, without stressing ourselves out about what the other guy is doing. Stress is what happens when you can't beat the sh_t out of someone who we think really deserves it. LOL fight nice girls.

SM, I totally agree. The "raw sewage" is chow for the glass minnows, puffers, dorgans & triggers. There's nothing left but a little brown cloud.

Lancerbye - yeah ... umm except, you'ld need several permits - the city permit to remove a tree, the coastal commission would need to see your environmental impact study, you would need a construction permit, a launch permit, and proof of insurance. And make sure you pay your fees for all of the above - oh, don't forget that while you are constructing your boat, you'll have to have a couple a dozen inspections by various local, state and federal "authorities". And, btw, all those people will come to visit using their SUV's and burning gas paid for by all of us (taxes).

Aren't we lucky to have such freedom??!!

Edit: Oh .. I almost forgot - On WHO'S property were you going to do this??

If you think that the permits and money grabs are bad on our side of the pond you should live in the Middle East where I am right now. These guys have elevated government gouging to a fine art, but we don't pay taxes on stuff so other than the housing costs it's still cheaper here I guess.

Don't get me started on the Raw sewage thing. A lot of cities still dump tons of raw sewage into our waters every day ( Victoria ,B.C.) but are trying to impose waste disposal laws on recreational boaters that will help clean up the waters. Don't you dare pee in the water unless you are 3 miles from land going at a speed of 10 knots. ( slight exageration)

A city to the south of me, Lake Worth, is trying to use an old sewage pipe that extends one mile offshore and that was used for DECADES to dump the effluent of an entire city into a delicate ecosystem. They are trying to use it now to dump the wastewater from a desal/reclaim water system, even though everyone says the levels of phosphate will be so high that the coral upcurrent will be smothered in algae.

The stormwater runoff from ONE golf course during one heavy, sustained rain dumps more phosphate into the system than ALL of the liveaboards in Palm Beach County, even if they've been hitting the buffet!
