World Cruiser, But What Range ?

considered this boat for a while, and dont want to dismiss it just yet.
it says "2500 mi. range" "Tanks
Fuel: 420"
so 6mpg?
is that down wind, with the current?
what would that boat average over the long haul?
if 5 MPG thats only 6000 gallons for a world tour. or 18-28K in fuel costs. by putting a few hundred gallons more on board, you could do a CA-HI-Japan trip. but how realistic is that range?

what is a good range for world cruises? i was talking to the broker, he said adding 800-1000 gallons would not be a big deal due to the boats custom lengthen job.

ok, see if you can follow me on this. that lagoon power. what if i add a hydraulic raised mast, say 30-40'. and a jib or screacher, perhaps a mainsail. it looks about the same as the lagoon 44 sail cat.... a screacher cost what? 5-7K? an aluminum pole, some guys, some hydraulics. i know i am not talking about a 15KT screamer, but i think it would out sail that trawler i was looking at. plus the sail plan is basically known! i think it would work, but i am no sailor.

that might be a great plan. as the lagoon 410 has no aft cabin, and it would cost more to add one then to add a sail. plus i get enough power and fuel to have a nice trip without wind as well.

Sea state will usually dictate a slower speed, closer to 10 knots
So why not look for vessels with engines and efficiency at that speed range
Smaller engines for starters

and also interesting to see it has had an extension to help remedy its inefficiencies, surely better to start with the correct length vessel

All too heavy, too short and inneficient in my opinion

Well how about looking to designs that actually work

Look at Chamberlain and Oram for a start
Look at long waterline length and short accommodation
Look at low hp and high torque

Personally, if you are going to sail, buy a sailboat. If you want to motor, buy a trawler or power boat.

Throwing a bunch of sails on a motor boat will cost you lots of money and you'd very rarely have the chance to use them. Additionally, since the boat wasn't designed for the sail plan, the boat might just be un seaworthy.

Nor would I count on the sails to extend your range to make a crossing, that could very well be a HUGE mistake that could cost you more than the boat.

thats the thing, they dont make anything that suits me 100%, and thats why i cant find the perfect boat. i need room, and i want to add sails within 2 years. i will not be sailing for at least 2 years, except excursions around long island. i just dont know enough to piece this together on my own. so i will tell you what i want, if you have a suggestion , tell me.

i need massive room, some sailing ability, blue water. under 300K i would prefer, but could go to 350K asking if need be. so the perfect boat is out, the 56MS nordhavn.

Oh god, here we go again.

Scoobert, your last thread was closed because it got rediculous and invited derision and here you go again.

You had an active thread that ran for several months telling you that your plans for using power to go round the world was not practical.

Now, you post pics of a power cat that is designed and built for coastal use only and then start asking if you can add a mast and sails, etc.

This was covered in DETAIL in your last thread and everyone said no. A sailboat is a sailboat, a power boat is a powerboat, simple. To adapt a powercat to take sail would be HUGELY expensive and you'd end up with an unbalanced and unsafe passagemaker.

Sure the broker is going to say you can add tanks, he wants the sale! The reality is that you'll end up with a craft that will handle like a pig.

Look for a proper cruising sailing cat, just like has been suggested by many members before.
