Wiring 12V to Outboard ???

I have a mercury 15HP outboard (2012) which has a built in alternator. I want to hook up the outboard to a battery to charge itr and also to a 12V marine socket. anyone have suggestions on how i should do it ?
Should i just connect the outboard red and black to the battery red and black terminals and connect the red and black of the outlet to the battery ?
wil it work fine charging and discharging at the same time ? I want to charge my phone and GPS while on the water.

If it indeed has a built in alternator (many OB's actually use a bridge rectifier), which is regulated for battery charging, then you should be able to connect to the battery. Check the rated output of the alternator and install an appropriate fuse to protect your battery.

In general, direct connects to a battery are a bad idea -- the circuit should be fused. So, be sure and install a fuse in the outlet circuit too.
