Wing Engine?

While browsing through various threads on this forum I have seen references to a "wing engine", usually in the context of an auxillary source of power. I am unfamiliar with this. What is a wing engine?

Usually a small auxiliary engine capable of powering the vessel in case of a failure of the prime mover. I've seen some that are hooked to the primary running gear at the shaft by pulley's or chain and others that are stand alone with a setup similar to a sail drive. In some cases the auxiliary generator is used or in rarer occasions the aux generator powers an electrical motor.

Be My Wingman

Apparently named after the company that built motors for small powered boats. One model shares the company's name.

I think it more likely that the “get home” auxiliary engine was named for it’s location (on the “wing” of the main), rather than for a particular manufacturer.

Something makes me think that when engines were added to wooden boats that were designed without this "New fangled technology", that the engines were often located in the "wing" as it was easier to install the prop and shaft away from the centre of the vessel.

Of course I reserve the right, to be wrong!

If you squint you can just make out the wing prop on this one.......for sale locally.

By way of common & frequent usage, and by seniority, I believe that I've earned that particular right.
