Which Racor to use with a Perkins 6.354

Hi All,

Will a 500MA which supports 60 GPH fuel flow be sufficient or should I go to the 900MA which supports 90 GPH? Looking to see what other cruisers have successfully installed. Tried to find out the maximum rate that the fuel pump pushes with no success. So, I figured I'd just find out who has installed what.

All the best,
K

I use a 900 on a 65 hp cummins. No issue for years. Water seperation is at the element. I
I may loose some of the turbo effect. I get a huge element surface.i have a vaccum gauge.
You could call TAD and they will know the flow rate in the Perkins.http://www.tadiesels.com/perkins-63544.html

A good rule of thumb is that a diesel burns 1 gph for every 20 hp it puts out. If your Perkins is rated for 120 hp, that means maximum burn will be 6 gph. Double that for the fuel return, and the maximum flow rate needed for your filter might be 12 gph.

There is also the solids capacity--how much gunk does it take to plug up the filter. The 900 series has over twice the solids capacity with a 2 psi loss as the series 500.

Based on my experience, I'd put the 900 in.

Most diesel engine draw more than they use. The DD671 draws about 75 gph, but only used 6 gph. Its better to install bigger filter than needed and also double filters for quick filter change over with vacuum gauges on each filter. I would install the 900.
