Yep.

We were out sailing the sound on Saturday. Bit cold but a lovely sail.

A lot depends on the marina. Many do get some freezing and it varies by year. As mentioned even in Maine they fish year round. I have been out on a boat in Feb in Down East Maine. Lots of fun as long as your in the pilot house. The hard core recreational fisherman here in CT usually haul right before Thanksgiving and Launch in early March.

Well,

Sailing when its cold is one thing, but snow and ice on the boat is another.
Being its fall till late December, how much wind chill are you willing to deal with in January and February? I would say that sailing into late fall is viable, but winter, not so much. jmo

Fair winds.

Re: Viability of winter boating in New England?

We sail year round here. Ice free harbour and many lovely days in jan, feb and March. Had a nice sail last week in fact; my neighbor just spent 4 days along the eastern shore in comfort. Virtually no traffic to worry about. Having a great heater and dressing for the weather help, but if you read the history of the local fishing fleets, winter was just another fishing season. Here, Newfoundland and New England. They were much harder men than me- but when you pick your days and have the gear, there are some fabulous sailing days all year around. Even here at 45 N!

You can boat in New England in the winter but by the time you chop through the ice you'll be to tired to boat.

Nah, you just need the right boat:

Breaking ice is more fun than you should be allowed to have on the water.

Commercial fishing in winter, on a calm day, is a blast too. I've been underway well below zero F, even on small open boats. Not a problem if you're dressed for it.

Out in breaking seas, where you have to be chipping ice all the time, it's not so much fun. I'd imagine sailing would lose some of its appeal at that point, too, although I've never had the pleasure.
