Travel routes US to Europe?

Hello all,
Hope I don't get skinned alive for asking this question.

Is there any route that a coastal boat could take to get to Europe? I was wondering if the Northern route via Iceland would work? The jaunts seem fairly short. Are the seas too rough?

Re: Travel routes US to Europe?

I read a book once about a Archeology Grad student who sailed a leather boat from Ireland to Newfoundland in the summer. I think the longest stretch was 200 miles between land falls. His only troubles was Ice and fog and of course days with out wind while in the fog. He also sustained a hole in his boat from a small iceberg. Theres another fellow who is apparently going to do it again in another leather boat. Amateur archeologist on mission to prove leathe... | Local | News | Owen Sound Sun Times.

So I think a radar would be very helpful on this trip, on a motor yacht.

Re: Travel routes US to Europe?

Short answer = no

Long answer = that might not matter greatly as going "direct" may be feasible, but that will depend on how coastal a coastal boat you are talking about (IIRC you were talking about 80(?) foot of trawler at one point?).

Re: Travel routes US to Europe?

I read of a trawler that made the trip from Europe to the America via Scotland, Torshaven Iceland, Greenland, Labrador, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. They had to wait several times for a good weather forcast several times to make the longest sea crossings.

Re: Travel routes US to Europe?

We have been looking at that route and our opinion is power boat that is built in NS like ours probably can handle that trip, but can we? The conditions can be rough and dangerous. Our range is 750-850 mi and we would be able to cross to Greenland, then Iceland and then over to Scotland. But summers are short and what if the summer turns really ugly, with lots of storms. In a nice day, the North seas look pretty intimidating to me! But if the person is experienced enough, and if your boat is an offshore boat, than more power to you.
