Re: SS Water Tanks

300 Series S/S has been successfully used in water containing 100 - 300 parts per million (ppm) chlorides at moderate temperatures.
Since municipal water is generally treated at much lower concentrations (± 4 ppm at the tap); I wouldn’t be overly concerned with filling SS tanks with municipal water.
Notwithstanding, chronic exposure to any concentration of chlorides, especially warm stagnant water, won’t be beneficial to Stainless.
Accordingly, I’d suggest your use of the term “suspect” might be reasonably accurate.

Sorry, I`m unqualified to be more definitive.

Re: SS Water Tanks

Lets see, I carry 120 gallons, so........I think 25 gallons of Wild Turkey ought to do the trick!!
Hell of an idea!! Pickle the tank and yourself at the same time!!!

Re: SS Water Tanks

We have had stainless steal tanks in both of our boats. We use chlorine to shock and clean the tanks annually over a period of 18 years with no adverse affects. This is used as a cleaning process and never left in the tanks for more than 24 hours. We always thoroughly flush the tanks and since we live aboard, the tanks are used up and refilled about every 7 to 10 days. We will even add an occasional 3/4 once per gallon if the water stars to get a little stale. Our tanks have always had large inspection ports so we have been able to get inside to have a good look around. Some city water systems will use a chlorine for treatment so avoiding it may not be as easy as one might think. Chuck

Re: SS Water Tanks

Bleach or iodine in the correct proportions will do the job and shouldnt harm the tanks... it's a very low dose. Isnt the bleach concentration something like a tablespoon per 50 gallons?
