Southbound on ICW 2010

Let's discuss up to date local knowledge on anchorages, slips and other info.

I'm looking for cool places to spend the night without spending an arm and a leg.

Lots of free anchorages in the ICW. Cumberland Island is one of my favourites.

ActiveCaptain is what you want for research and moving along the ICW. We're on the ICW in North Carolina right now and just wrote about our experiences with using AC on an iPad while we navigate along the ditch in yesterday's newsletter:
http://www.activecaptain.com/newsletters/2010-11-03.php

It's not just the anchorages, bridge info, marina info/pricing...it's also the various shoaling hazards and obstructions being updated daily.

We will be be heading south from Hampton, VA in a couple of days. There is a great anchorage here just north of the Bridge over Hampton River. Drop me a line if you are passing through in the next few days. I've got a car and a little local knowledge.

I use Active Captain on an ipad all the time. I also have on my iphone. It works great. I would suggest visiting the Salty SE Cruisers Net for ICW information too. www. cruisersnet.net. Have a good trip.

We do use Active Captain, but also try cruisersnet.net and the waterwayguide.com a whole lot. We live and cruise the NC coast and all above reference guides work very well.

Def Stop in Oriental NC, anchor or slip...and go to M&M's or Silo's for lunch or dinner. Morehead City Yacht Basin and walk to RuddyDucks, or Beaufort Town Docks ('spensive) and Front Street Grill. Beach House Marina in Surf City and walk to Bubba's on the beach for Oysters! Carolina Beach at Joyner Marina... haven't found a fav restaurant yet, but getting ready to test that out. Don't miss Southport Marina and the town of Southport on the south side of the Cape Fear.

Have Fun!!

There's a lot of free dockage at cities in N.C. We're in Elizabeth City for the day and they have free slips for 48 hours, as does Oriental and New Bern. Skipper Bob's "Anchorages Along the ICW" is a good source for free docks.

Lots of towns may OFFER "free" dockage, but in the examples given, let me add a few facts to the discussion. While New Bern DOES have town docks, they are not for overnight use. They are hardly equipped for overnight either. Then, as for Oriental, again, they DO have free town docks, but being able to get a space in the 2.5 slips they have it almost impossible. You view the Oriental docks on a webcam at towndock.net, but unless you are there stalking and waiting for a space to open up, don't ever plan on just showing up and finding room. All of this said, there are good anchorages in both towns where a small to medium-size powerboat can drop the hook just yards away.
