Should Large Power Boats be Banned?

We've had a lively discussion in another thread devoted to the retirement of Steve & Linda Dashew, about whether it's morally acceptable to design large power yachts in view of the possible environmental damage they might cause.

I'm starting this thread to move the discussion to a separate place, as it distracts from discussion of the Dashews and their career.

My opinion on the matter, for whatever little it may be worth (opinions are like . . . . and so forth) is that there is no justifiable reason whatsoever to single out power boats, when so many recreational activities have some carbon footprint or another.

Discuss! Please be polite and respectful to each other.

I believe large power/sail boats over a certain size be banned from all US estuaries and the Chesapeake/Delaware bays(s).

No! Small power boats should be banned.

At what size does a boat become large?

No. But owners should be aware of their emissions and do good to compensate.

(Being vegetarian is commendable btw ;-) )

Please not more government involvement, we already have to much legislation.

Re: Should Large Power Boats be Banned?

Well, a true displacement trawler in the 40 ft. range doesn't burn any more fuel than a pick up truck, really. The pool of boaters who are able (can afford) to take the Dashew approach to about anything is really very small.

So I vote no, there's no reason to "ban" large powerboats.

Ban it all!

Ban the boat on which you float,
ban the gear by which you steer,
ban mo that makes you go,
ban the fuel that is its gruel!

Ban it all!

Or maybe it'd be easier just to ban the banners.

The default answer to "should we ban X" is No...

BINGO!

The thing that the banners rather stupidly fail to realize is that they are going to be next. That is, as soon as you grant government the authority to arbitrarily ban things, just because some people think they are "bad," or just because you don't understand why someone else needs (or just wants) them, then you set your own pleasures up for being banned. Sooner or later -- I guarantee it -- someone is going to think that the thing YOU like is "bad." Sooner or later someone is going to ask why you think you need to have that.

Having supported banning things in the past, you will have no moral ground on which to object to the ban on YOUR pleasures! Because ALL of our pleasures consume resources that could be used in other ways -- ways that someone out there thinks is "better" than the way YOU are using them!

Re: Should Large Power Boats be Banned?

When a large power yacht pulls into an anchorage it's generally almost silent... Unless they Crank up a monster sound system and light up a disco ball. They are also good to hide behind when it's really foggy. Generally they don't contribute to whatever social activities are present.. no fraternizing.. Lastly they take up lots of space.. On balance who cares? No ban:-)

Re: Should Large Power Boats be Banned?

No, absolutely not. Individual freedom to make choices should not be infringed upon in a free society. Even bad choices.

Think about the logical conclusion to this sort of thinking- why not outlaw all internal combustion engines? Why don't we set a maximum permissible living area per person in a house. You want a 3000 square foot house? Not if you don't have a family of 8, citizen.

There's no limit to how restrictive this kind of thing could get. Anyone who lives in a free society should reject it wholesale.

Perhaps you should be 'banned' for such a stupid post

Re: Should Large Power Boats be Banned?

Couple of posts including the original made me wanna puke.

Glad to see things get on track.

On a scale of 1-10 on eco damage pleasure boats are at the very very low end of that scale.

A large container ship pollutes as much as 50 Million cars. 1 ship = 50,000,000 cars..

You rarely hear about this because we need cheap junky crap to throw in a landfill.
