Sabreline 36 Aft Cabin Fast Trawler?

This little make and model is trying to steal my heart. Need common sense advise from all you power/trawler/cruisers out there. I really love the model with the stabilizing sail but is she really seaworthy or is that a gimmick? This is my first boat. Reading all your posts has helped me immensely and I will so appreciate your input now.

i met a guy in cuba about 12 yrs ago who had a small gb trawler w/ a "stabilizing" sail. he said he could pick up an extra 1/2 kt with the right wind conditions. as far as stabilizing goes, i think it's a possibility but wouldn't bet the farm on it (maybe it would keep your nose to the wind better at anchor??).

the sabre is a fine boat...my wife is in love with the 47, but...............

a stabilizing sail is not a gimmick.

i have one on my 45' steel trawler. i always set the sail. of course if you are powering head on into seas then it is unlikely to be working because you'll likely be straight into the wind too, but you shouldn't roll a lot in those conditions either.

as long as you are on anything approaching a beam reach then you'll heel a little and the rolling will be lessened or even stop altogether if the wind is strong enough. then you just have to get used to going along heeled over like a sailboat.

probably a good idea to check the underwater profile of your hull. if it is a full displacement hull (rounded at the back like an old sailboat) and it rolls in a beam sea then the sail will help. if the hull is more semi-displacement (flat at the back), then chances are that the sail won't really do much, but then it won't roll as much as much as a full displacement boat.

This is a semi-displacement, 35-foot, 14-ton, hull-speed (max speed 7.7 knots) "trawler."

i am in the process of adding a full sized forward mast, tabernacle mounted, to take a loose fitted gaff rig. in addition to stabilizing the roll, i hope to get a couple of knots in a decent breeze, and it will act as a get home rig in case of engine failure.

i have no intention of beating to windward. that's what the engine is for. but if the wind is on or abaft the beam then it should help forward propulsion and a little roll dampening too.
