Lots of good advice here so far.

My input would be if your schedule permits, start with sailing. As time goes by, you can always 'go to the dark side' and move over to power. Personal opinion here but I believe starting boating as a sailor makes one a better boater long-term.

We sailed for 15 yrs, did a lot of Great Lakes cruising before moving to a 46' trawler and we've been up and down the East Coast several times, two winters in the Bahamas, etc.

We enjoy the power boat but I definitely feel that the sailing experience has made us better boaters.
