We also replaced our sails and rigging every 10 years for $10,000, or an average of $1,000/year for full time sailing.
Now try doing the numbers again using a 50 ft performance cat in Australia.
The mainsail alone will eat your $10k and will most likely be rags before your 10 years is up plus headsails and deck hardware. (based on my own obserbvations on my well used 10metre cat and observations on other "well sailed" multis in may area)

I did my numbers here for mine several years ago and there was an initial outlay of $70k +- in mast , winches, track and traveler clutches and sails if buying.
Probably closer to $100k now?.

That money plus the cost of replacement gear if left in a bank account here would earn me almost a years worth of fuel.
Or you could use it for something that earns a lot more than that, which is what I did.

It gets 2 mpg,
The 50ft trawler in my sig has a 6lxb Gardner in it

They reckon it uses

After cruising the boat for twelve months we are consistently getting 7 - 8 litres per hour at 7 knots (1100 RPM) and we are ecstatic!!
1 litre a nautical mile.
Thats almost half the fuel usage of your example.
Perhaps you need to try a different boat.

So what?
How many hours did you put on your mast and sails?
The efficient powered vessel uses Zero hours on mast and sails.
Using your logic the powered vessel is an obvious winner

We have a sailing cat and would not miss the sails, as a motor cat it is very efficient and a great boat.
I enjoy sailing and have since i was 10.
Since we are running a full time business we can not usually wait for the perfect wind so we motor.
My dream cat would be a sunreef 60 or 70 with no sails just very efficient hulls and motors.
The Sunreef 70 has a 8000 nm range.

I know the spiele says that but how does it manage to get 2 l/nm using 455hp engines?

According to the website and brochure the 455hp is the smaller of the engines listed.
They do go up to
Quote:
Spacious engine rooms accommodating engine up to 1200 HP
In the brochure they make all sort of claims like
Quote:
Quote:
Record breaking low fuel consumption
(at 11 knots with 2 x 800HP full load at 20l / h per engine)
Long cruising range (from 3 000 to 10,000nm,depending on engines)
Quote:
Quote:
The first unit JAMBO has travelled from Poland to Bora Bora via Northern Africa, South America and the Pacific, covering more than 18 000 nautical miles with fuel consumption reaching as low as 1,77L per mile per
engine (2 x 455HP) at 8 knots!
The recently launched DAMRAK II cruised in Scandinavia before heading to the Mediterranean for summer. With an average cruising speed of 11 knots, DAMRAK II consumed only 20L per hour per engine (2 x 870HP) with range reaching 4000nm.
Reducing speed to 8 knots meant that autonomy up to 10,000 nautical miles on one fuel tank (2 x 8000L).
Thats 1.6L/nm, which is in line with the numbers from cruisers with 100hp or less engines.
Not usually for 45 tonne 70fters with 455hp x 2

The engines used are cummins QSM11-455's
From the brochure it says they use 16 lph each @ 1100rpm
https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q...qwaQViiw&pli=1

Are they claiming they can do 8 knots on one engine only, by simply putting that motor in gear?

So when i place my order for the 70 i need to specify in the contract it must meet fuel use claims made by the company.
Will do.
