Now try doing the numbers again using a 50 ft performance cat in
Australia.
The
mainsail alone will eat your $10k and will most likely be rags before your 10 years is up plus headsails and
deck hardware. (based on my own obserbvations on my well used 10metre cat and observations on other "well sailed" multis in may area)
I did my numbers here for mine several years ago and there was an initial outlay of $70k +- in
mast , winches, track and traveler clutches and
sails if
buying.
Probably closer to $100k now?.
That
money plus the cost of replacement
gear if left in a bank account here would earn me
almost a years worth of
fuel.
Or you could use it for something that earns a lot more than that, which is what I did.
The 50ft
trawler in my sig has a 6lxb Gardner in it
They reckon it uses

1 litre a nautical mile.
Thats almost half the
fuel usage of your example.
Perhaps you need to try a different
boat.
