Purchasing a 1987 CHB Royal Star Sun Deck MY

I am new to the forum and I'm in the process of purchasing a 42' CHB Royal Star Sundeck twin cabin. I'm not new to boating but have no experience with Taiwan boats (last boat was a 42' Californian LRC trawler). It has twin Lehman SP275s with low hours and are original engines. I'm looking for advise from those of you that have experience with these boats and engines. I don't know much about either. My experience with diesels is Cummins and CATs.

If you have not surveyed the boat yet pay close attention to the underwater hull. Many boats of that era were cored below the waterline; not just above. Over time the core gets compressed and water leaks into the core. If it's a balsa cored hull below the waterline don't buy the boat would be my sugesstion. If the balsa core is wet and rotten which it likely is your repair costs will be far beyond what is affordable. If the core is divinicell you have a chance but every thru hull penetration must be remove core out down to the inner layer and solid glassed so it will not compress and no water can re enter the core. Even still that is a $50K+ repair. If this has already been done you've got a good boat. A good surveyor should pull one thru hull to inspect. Ask the seller if you can do that and pay for the reinstall. It will be worth it! I am the voice of experience. And I have owned my 1988 boat for almost 20 years now. George in St Thomas.
