Pilgrim 40, trawler/canal/coastal cruiser, Great Gatsby style

How is that for a subject thread title

I just thought the vessel of this subject thread needed a little more jazzy introduction,...great Gatsby style. After all this design does harken back to that era.

This Pilgrim 40 design was discussed previously on this forum here:
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...0-a-58766.html
There is some good information and informative posting there, but I thought a new beginning, with a jazzer title, and more photos might garner more attention to this sweet little design.

There was a very recent posting with a PDF describing how this boat design came about, and its target market. Perhaps you may find yourself in that market potential,...interesting reading in any case. The PDF was a bit too large to attach here, so I made a link to it:

I'm a big fan of the Pilgrim 40. There was recently a "mkII" for sale on YW that had a bigger Caterpillar engine and built in aluminum. Much more horsepower than typically came in this boat. I wonder how that performs compared to all the others that were obviously designed to be slow and comfy?

Oooh, how pretty ! I'd love to go cruise the European canal system with one of these for a year or two.

There are some more photos here:

And I am sure there are more to come.

Here is another nice 'canal boat' that might be considered a modern cousin, but not as nostalgic.

....speaking of euro canals, have a look at a few photos here:

Thanks! I love the hull design. Probably, it won't win any races but wouldn't put anyone in the poor house for fuel. Looks great for old farts like me.

Beiland, that 'modern cousin' is also very nice. Here's something a bit similar, the 43' Moxie by Michael Kasten. This was an early favourite of mine. Don't know if any have been built.

I love Pilgrims. Our Scout harkens back to the 20's too. A great time for boat design. And now some Scout photos!

Everything back then had fine lines and a stone crusher as an engine. Pistons the size of buckets. No ballast needed with those engines.

Scout 30, lovely photos. That is a motor yacht that could make an old sailor's heart skip a beat.

It seems to me those with that deck configuration were called an Iron Horse or something close?

re: Pilgrim 40, trawler/canal/coastal cruiser, Great Gatsby style

I just purchased a Pigrim last Thanksgiving, not planned that way, but that's how happened!
The boat was used as a liveaboard for many years, and as a result, many minor problems with equipment need to be addressed. Everything seems to work, but not up to par.
On my way right now to Maryland to start work on the systems in need. Much cleaning and refinishing need to be done. The boat will be moved to Florida as soon as warmer weather starts to occur. Come on Spring!!!!!!!
Will keep this thread informed of progress as it occurs.

PS The Pilgrim on Yacht world right now is a "Pilgrims Progress 40". It is not the same manufacturer as the original Pilgrim, as well of being built out of aluminum instead of fiberglass.

Curious, where in MD? I used to be based out of Annapolis.

Where in Florida? I'm now based part time in St Augustine.

Interesting, I had not seen that vessel before. It sure appears to be a 'redesign' of the original Pilgrim 40, but without the nostalgic looks of the original. Can't say that I am attracted to it, ....certainly not Great Gatsby looking.

Nice looking design, but both it and the Scouts have a limited saloon area (if any) on the main deck like the Pilgrim design. Neither of those ~40 designs have as much 'living space' as the Pilgrim design.

The older ACF's (American Car Foundry) and some Elco's also had their wheel houses further forward. I need to look back at some of those designs as I have not done so in a long time. I almost bought an old ACF to liveaboard when I was in college (or shortly after,...can't remember now...ha..ha)

I've been watching this one on Yachtworld for a while now. If I was in the market right now ....
