Port Engine Won't Start

When I was in my 20's there was a junkyard I went to for car parts (back before they insisted on being called "salvage yards"). There was a guy that worked there that had one eye and a terribly scarred face. Someone there told me it was because earlier in his life, he had the habit of checking the fluid in batteries without taking the cigarette out of his mouth.
