I have a 4236 Perkin on my steel ketch and since my purchase in 2007 my average consumption is 1.28 gall per hour. (battery charge-cruising 5-6 knots) 7 knots 1.8 galls per knot

Here's some history on those great engines mate.

i run (2) 6.354 turbos on a 42' trawler at 1900 rpm/9 - 10 knots, and overall burn 5 - 6 gph total.
this is over 24 years of running - very happy.

Re: Perkins 6.354 Diesel Engine Fuel Economy

Most of the personal experience information is unscientific and often meaningless and I take them with a large grain of salt. Each boat even boats of same brand with the same motors may burn different amounts of fuel for the given speed. What is important is the amount of Hp the motor will have to transmit to the specific gear and prop to push that particular boat at that speed. As an example of this the fuel use of my boat on launch day is no longer accurate nor is the top speed # all have changed with the addition of weight. With most diesel motors old or new school you will burn approximately one gallon of fuel for every 20 hp produced. If the boat is heavy-bottom dirty-tanks full or empty-prop and gears not optimal it can have a significant effect. The only reliable way to determine how a particular boat is functioning in this department is to get a calibrated method of measuring fuel consumption and boat speed factoring in any current and wind-age and weight of and state of tankage. For a less accurate but practical estimate you can go to the prop calculator on the Boatdiesel site and plug in the needed #s on the boat in question and come up with some fair estimates.

Re: Perkins 6.354 Diesel Engine Fuel Economy

I've run (2) 6354's for 25 years in my 40 ft trawler. running 2,000rpm at 10 kts i burn 5 to 5 1/2 gph, total. VERY pleased overall with these motors. No maintenance other than filters and oil changes but did change out all coolers including the engine heat exchanger but even those change-outs were for for "preventive" purposes.
