It would be better to look at it from the other end. Anyone who can't get 30,000 m from dacron sails is doing something wrong. That should be an expectation rather than an upper limit.

Maybe you should ask the larger multihull guys how their dacron sails go.

Dream on!
Boat has 80 h.p. with maximum speed just under 8 knots at 4 GPH (2400 RPM). Usually cruise near 7 knots using 2 GPH (1900 RPM).

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs
Mark, thanks for the real world figures, 2 nmpg - 3.5 nmpg is right in the same range as all of the old single screw Taiwanese trawlers which i mentioned above which is generally accepted as being quite economical for powerboats but is not even half of what a gas guzzling motorhome gets and a far cry from what an economy car gets. It seems to me that the only possibility of getting the economy i want would be to build a long, light power trimaran with a smallish diesel, im thinking maybe 44ft x 16ft (for docking and hauling by travelift) l/b of perhaps 14:1 and perhaps 10000lbs, with a VW 1.9 TDI (1gph@1900rpm) What would it cruise at? i dunno but skinny hulls like this are not constrained to the usual hull speeds. hmmm.
Anyone have any figures for something similar?
Steve.

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs
I just paid $166.00 a litre for desiel straight into the boat at Forster Fish Co-op NSW AUSTRALIA. Not bad considering petrol stations are lucky to be only 10 cents a litre cheaper and marinas can be fluttering just under $2.00

Gee, Shane, what a deal: 166.00 a litre!!! No wonder the fishermen are complaining about fuel prices!
But seriously, there are a few fuel docks in Oz that only charge a bit above street prices... there's one in Kettering, Tas, and one in Iluka, NSW and... well darn, there must be a few others that are not greedy. INterestingly, on the Clarence river, the fuel dock at Iluka is as described above while the marina at Yamba, a mile away on the other side of the river runs 40-50 cents a litre higher. One has to wonder why they have ANY fuel customers.
Greed is so ugly...
Cheers,
Jim

I was comparing gallons per hour, not miles per gallon.

Our sailboat uses under 1 gal/hr and I still complain! We mostly sail but often the wind isn't with us so we motor to reach a place we are going. At least we have the option-right now with the price of gas I'm trying to figure out how to hook up sails on my car. Somehow I think tacking down the 405 at rush hour may be a bit of a problem!! (for those not from LA area-it ranks as one of the busiest freeways in US)

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs
First simple step is to travel one knot below hull speed. There economy likely to be best. Many post still comming up on other sites with people trying to get a few extra knots from there 28Kt 700Hp + overweight boats. That kind of thinking gets you the 700HP car and short tire life. Its a macho thing, big motor-big noise-big wake -burnt rubber and now big fuel bills. It will all come out in the wash. Everywhere there are more people wanting more things and on a relative scale less to go around. As long as men keep bonking unprotected women this sinerio will only get worse. We in America had a good run for the last century now things may have hit the wall and some belt tightening may be needed. My 18/mpg car may be on its way out in the next decade and my wifes 36/mpg car on its way in. Same for boats. Just think of all the cheap live aboard motor boats this trend will generate. As long as they don't leave the dock those big ugly three story wake makers may make fine homes.

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs
The plan is to have $8 to $10 a gallon fuel cost. Enjoy while you can.
