Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs ?

When we had our Tayana 37 we found that the wind almost never blew the way we needed to go. We have a trawler now with diesel fuel capacity of 600 gal. I use a Garmin flow meter to approximate, monitor, and economize my fuel usage.

Hahahahah! Are we even allowed to use the word economy when referring to a 48 foot trawler?!

Does that compensate for return fuel?

Yes
Look at the boat in my sig for an example

After cruising the boat for twelve months we are consistently getting 7 - 8 litres per hour at 7 knots (1100 RPM) and we are ecstatic!!

Not bad considering they are shifting a 32 tonne home around

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs ?

Converted to electric propulsion in 2008. Used seven gallons of gas last season and one quart of oil for the generator. Cruised about 350 miles. I don't see a problem.

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs ?

I think it's great this country has both. Relatively inexpensive fuel and the wealth and technology to save energy if we choose to.

Re: Outrageous Fuel Costs ?

My 'work' boat is a 34' Novi lobster boat with a 6 cyl John Deere diesel . Last year I converted it to run on WVO ( waste vegetable oil ... french-fry grease) , and my fuel bill went from over 2k$ / year to alittle over 300$.
I get the grease for free and my only eggspenses are filters and my time ...and the little bit of diesel it takes to start and purge the engine before i shut her down.

Can you dig it ?

I'd love, love, love, to go electric but it's just too damned expensive to convert. I'll wait until the prices drop.
